Hiking gear checklist for the day’s hiking

Today I was thinking about what should be on a hiking gear checklist for hikers who are just starting out.

With that in mind, I’ve created the list below as a general guide to what you should look to grab when you get your hiking gear together for a day outing.

Hiking pants or hiking shorts

Proper hiking pants are a must. Water is always a good idea. I like the ones that have vents that can be opened to allow for better air circulation to keep your feet dry as sweat is allowed to move away from the skin. I also love hiking pants with detachable bottoms so they can easily double as shorts.

Hiking fleece

A must for cooler temperatures. A fine hiking fleece will keep you warm and dry under the right waterproof hiking jacket.

base layers

You must make sure that you have appropriate base layers. The base first layer is next to your skin, so, like hiking pants, you want breathability to comfortably wick away sweat. The colder it is, the more layers you need. It’s always a good idea to carry an extra one or two with you just in case.

gaiters

If you’re going to be wading through swamps, water, snow, etc., gaiters are really useful to help keep your feet and shoes dry.

walking hat

If it’s chilly when hiking, a good woolen hat is a great addition. Worn under the hood of your waterproof jacket, it will keep your head nice and warm! Alternatively, if it’s hot and the sun is falling, a baseball cap or a beach-style hiking hat will protect you from any harmful rays.

Hiking gloves

These should be waterproof, windproof, and ideally leave you with some movement in your hands to grip, open, etc.

Hiking socks

Good socks are just as important as boots. It’s worth getting good hiking socks that complement your hiking shoes or boots to ensure maximum comfort and avoid the dreaded blisters!

day or technical package

You of course need something to carry your extra gear and some essential supplies comfortably pack today On your back is a must.

Hiking shoes and boots

It is of great importance when hiking. You need the right hiking shoes or boots for the climate and weather you’re hiking in. They should fit well and your shoes or boots should break in well. It’s a good idea to break them in or in your house or around the block before using them for a picnic. Always wear hiking socks when you break in your hiking boots!

Waterproof hiking jacket

It really depends on the climate you are hiking in but it always rains at some point so you need to have a waterproof hiking jacket with you. There are many options to choose from, many of which have detachable layers and can therefore be adapted to be used throughout the year.

Extra hiking clothes

Extra clothing is a must if you’re moving in and out of varying temperatures and weather which can happen very easily while you’re up the mountain. It’s always nice to have a little more than I think.

This list is not exhaustive but lists some of the main things that you should take with you on your day outing. Being as prepared as possible will ensure that you have as relaxing and enjoyable an outing as possible.
